Welcome to 5 Pine
In 5 Pine this year we have Miss Morgan and Mrs Whitehall.
29.06.2022: Design and Technology - electronic circuits
We have been learning about control technology, Siemens Poole and electronic circuits in DT this term. Today we finally got the chance to make our own circuits.
We started with the three essential components: a power source, wires and a device - we used motors and buzzers. Once we had correctly and safely made a complete circuit, we then expanded it by adding a switch so that we could control the circuit. We all managed to create a working circuit, some with multiple devices - this was a very loud lesson with so many buzzers going off at once!
Next lesson we are going to combine some of our Computing skills with our knowledge of circuits to begin creating a security device for a museum using our new Crumbles...
Jubilee petunias
A massive well done to everyone who carefully looked after their plant. They look fantastic! (Just waiting for the rain to stop so they can be planted.)
Summer term - Art
It's been a busy term despite being so short and as usual we have fitted plenty into our learning.
One of the most exciting and interesting things we have been doing is studying sculpture in our Art lessons. This started with thinking critically about sculpture in general and then looking at sculpture with an environmental message. We practised using an armature (framework), designed our sea creature sculptures and finally got to make them this week.
The main requirements were that the sculpture must use a plastic armature, be only made of waste materials and express an environmental message.
Children worked in a very focused manner, they all had a vision and knew exactly what they needed in order to make their design 'come to life'. Who would have thought so many amazing creations could be made from just things that go into the bin?!
Thank you to everyone who brought in materials for us to make use of.

Here are the results of our Celebration biscuits. The children spent time carefully icing and decorating their biscuits, helpfully assisted my our amazing TAs, Mrs Woodley and Maggie (from The Great British Bake Off), who kindly joined us again.
We hope you will agree that their final products look very impressive.
Wishing you all a fantastic Easter break.
7th April 2022
We've been baking again! Today was our final bake and we made flavoured biscuits for Easter.
Lemon and orange were the most popular flavour choices, along with mixed spice and cinnamon. This was our third time making biscuits and the process certainly went the most smoothly.
Here are some pictures before the biscuits went in the oven. We are very much looking forward to decorating our biscuits tomorrow.

This week we are lucky enough to have Daisy the Hamster with us. She's not been out to see the children much but has been entertaining (distracting) Miss Morgan when the school is quiet
Friday 10th December 2021
We had a very practical morning today:
The day started with Computing. We have been learning about databases and today we all created our own database using 2Investigate on Purple Mash. Our databases held data about the different planets in the solar system, some of us were then able to carry out searches on the data.
After break we continued our practical morning with Art. We have been learning about Peter Thorpe, who famously creates space pictures using an abstract background and a prominent foreground image. Today, we started with practising printing techniques - we used bubble wrap, straws, paper and sponges and experimented with different printing techniques and layering colours and effects. After lots of experimenting we created our own abstract space backgrounds.
Next week we will complete our Peter Thorpe inspired art by adding a foreground object.

A few weeks ago, we shared the progress of our learning in Science. This week we completed our Science topic and our double-page spread showing our learning over the topic. Children have really engaged in this topic and have enjoyed exploring the space theme within Literacy, Computing and Art lessons too.
Here are some fantastic examples of the work produced.
More Maths
In our Maths lessons we have continued to make better use of manipulatives to support our understanding.
Here are some images showing how we can use cubes to explore factors of a number.
Tuesday 30th November 2021
This year's Christmas hoop theme is 'Christmas films' - the film we randomly picked was 'Arthur Christmas'. We combined our Christmas hoop design with our DT sewing project and sewed Arthur inspired jumpers! The children have worked really hard over the past few weeks to create their individual jumpers which have now been hung onto our hoop along with personalised 'Arthur helpers' and some other key characters from the film. Not forgetting a large Arthur (beautifully drawn by Mrs Whitehall, and sewn together by Miss Morgan) taking centre stage of the hoop.
We wish everyone could visit the school to see the hoops from all the classes but sadly, during these times, that isn't possible.
Here are photos of each of our jumpers along with images of our completed hoop.
Friday 19th November 2021
Today we showed our support of Children in Need by wearing our pyjamas to school!! 😀
Monday 15th November 2021
To kick off Anti-Bullying week, we wore odd socks to school! The reason for this is to celebrate that we are all different.
This year's Ant-Bullying week theme is One Kind Word and children will be exploring this message in their Jigsaw lesson.
Science - Earth and Space
Following on from our trip to Winchester, we have been working hard in our Science lessons, gathering facts on our current topic. Alongside the learning for each lesson, we are creating a double-page-spread in our books to summarise the topic.
They are coming along nicely...

Another fantastic Friday for 5 Pine...
Maths Rock Star day: children enjoyed a variety of maths challenges and tasks including making their age posters. In the afternoon, our school hamster Daisy even joined us!
A massive well done to Daisy, William and Pollyanna who were awarded certificates for being the 'most valued players' during the TTRS England Rocks challenge that has been running the past week.
DT sewing: today we started our sewing topic in DT with children practising sewing on small pieces of fabric; trying to sew in straight lines and make the stitches a suitable size. On Monday they will begin creations to be hung on our class Christmas hoop.
Bebras computational thinking challenge: this is the third year that Year 5 have taken part in this worldwide challenge. It is organised in over 50 countries and designed to get students all over the world excited about computing. Each participant answers questions that focus on computational and logical thinking.
To the adults reading this, if you would like to have a go yourself at one of last year's challenges, follow this link: https://bebras.uk/ and go to the Challenges tab.
Results will be released in the coming weeks...
WB 8th November 2021
This week, we are lucky enough to have an additional member to our class - Daisy the hamster. We are all very pleased to have her join 5 Pine. The children love watching her running around the classroom in her ball when they come in each morning, and then they all get to say 'good morning' to her before our lessons begin.
Here are some photos of Daisy being extremely cute on Wednesday evening, distracting Miss Morgan from her work! 😊
10th November 2021
Completing our Georgia O'Keeffe topic, we used an online tutorial to draw a poppy in her style and then completed the poppy by painting it using water colour techniques.
Friday 5th November 2021
Wow, what a great time we all had at Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium 👩🚀🚀
We started the day exploring the range of interactive exhibits over two floors, then after lunch we experienced the planetarium show and our day was completed with a robot programming workshop which ended with a robot disco! Here is a selection of photos capturing some of our fun.
Maths - using manipulatives
In our Maths lessons we have been practising different techniques to support our learning - this has included making better use of the manipulatives and discussing and working through tasks in pairs to break down and explain the work.
Thursday 14th October 2021
In Art this half term we have been learning about Georgia O'Keeffe and practising techniques using water colour paints. Georgia O'Keeffe famously used to 'zoom in' on part of a flower rather than drawing the whole thing, this week we had a go at this. It's trickier than it might seem but here are our fantastic efforts.
Introducing our spiderette (spider plant baby)!
In Science we have been learning about life cycles, including plants. We looked at the different ways that plants can reproduce and we are now growing a class plant taken from Miss Morgan's spider plant. Currently it is establishing its roots in water and it will then be potted in soil. We are looking forward to watching it grow over the year and hoping it might have its own baby before the end of the summer term.
Unfortunately not the ones with chocolate chips.
