Thank you to Asda Poole who brought Pudsey in to see us on Wednesday 16th November.
Today was World Mental Health Day and to mark this occasion we encouraged everyone in school to wear a splash of yellow and it was great to see so many children taking part. We see more and more issues with mental health, both children and adults, especially since the COVID-19 pandemic. As a school we are working towards becoming a Trauma Informed School, undertaking training and changing our practice to support everyone with their metal health. If you are concerned or are aware of someone struggling with their mental health, please let us know and we'll see what we can do to support them.
The circus and space came to Upton Junior school last week.
Alan started by teaching the Year 4’s to juggle with coloured scarves, then with bean bags. They experimented with long gymnastic ribbons, feathers, spinning plates and even tried some very high stilts. The Years 4’s agree that none of these skills are as easy as they look and they would love another try. As a finale, Alan asked for an assistant and Mrs Hallam was brave enough to volunteer. Alan asked his lovely assistant to lay on the floor as he juggled knives right above her, I was told there was an extremely tense moment where Alan very nearly dropped a knife onto Mrs Hallam but thankfully he caught it just in time, phew.
It was certainly tense in the school hall on Friday for the Times Tables Champ final.
Each year group battled it out with great support from their teachers, fellow students and proud parents.
The brave competitors gave speedy answers to some very tricky maths questions, a nail biting morning for sure. Congratulations to all that entered!
Thank you to everyone that donated towards this year’s Poppy appeal. Thanks to you Upton Junior School managed to raise a massive £405.79.
I’m taking this opportunity to post another picture of our poppy display currently in reception and to let you know, over the past couple of weeks I have heard so many positive comments and compliments on how lovely it looks, well done everyone.
Remembrance Assembly this morning for Armistice Day. All the poppies, pictures, paintings and poems the children made last week looked stunning on display. Mrs Willis-Fisher talked about why poppies are worn at this time of year and the school had two minutes’ silence to think about and be thankful to all the people that lost their lives in the World Wars.
Wow! What an amazing afternoon and evening!
Our pupils, staff and Governors were astounded by our special musical visitors- world renowned electric string quartet Escala. Lucky pupils were treated to an amazing performance by the girls in a special assembly aimed at inspiring more of our pupils to want to learn an instrument. We were fortunate that the band stayed at the end of the day to meet and greet pupils, answer questions, and autographs and take selfies! In addition to this already spectacular opportunity, everyone was also invited to watch the girls perform in the evening at the Classical night of Upton House Music festival; also featuring Sir Bryn Terfel & Australian Soprano Lauren Fagan who were accompanied by the sensational Bournemouth Symphony concert Orchestra. Two of our lucky pupils also won our in-school competition to meet Sir Bryn and Lauren, also bumping into Escala backstage too!
Thank you to everyone involved who made the day a very special and memorable occasion! Special thanks to Escala's manager Vicky Corley Smith, Stephen McManus from Upton House, Adam Jackson (Director) and Daisy Smith (Presenter/DJ) from Hot Radio 102.8FM, Ed Baker from Deep South Media and of course Vic, Stephanie, Honor and Helen from Escala!
