We hope everyone enjoyed visiting the 'Garden of Dreams' this afternoon displaying some of the work from the children's PSHCE Jigsaw topic. What a fantastic display from Mrs Hart and her team of dedicated staff helpers! Huge thanks to everyone involved who worked so hard to make this such an inviting and memorable occasion.  It was lovely to see so many wonderful dreams for our pupils' future  and we wish them every success in achieving them!

Some of our pupils arrived at school this Wednesday in their Beavers, Cubs and Brownie uniforms. It all made sense when Mrs Ramsden (who is also a Guide leader) and Mrs Alsop (one of our community governors and a Rainbow leader) took the assembly.

 

The children shared all about International Scouting Founder's Day and Lord Baden Powell. It is fascinating to live so close to where it all started with the first ever experimental camp being on Brownsea Island in 1907 (which of course is one of our School House's too!) All these years later the Scouting movement has grown and gone from strength to strength inspiring people from all over the world- currently 10 million Guides and 32 Million Scouts worldwide!

 

On Thursday 9th February 2017, Bournemouth University students came to Upton Junior School. When they arrived, we had a quick break while they set up in the classroom. After the students had finished setting up, 6S excitedly walked in and found a seat by one of the students. Once Dan and the 6 other students introduced themselves, we played a quick game about what we already knew about University.

Soon after we finished the game, Dan spoke to us again and answered any questions. We found out that in the UK alone, there are 37,500 courses you can take. Then our students gave us each a sheet we had to fill in, which was about if we went to University what course would we take.

When everyone had finished filling in the sheet, our student (Abbie) gave us all an A3 sheet of coloured paper- which was used to make our graduation hats. We then had to decorate round and on top of our hats with what course we’d like to take. Most children (who finished quickly) got to make a scroll to match our hats. A few minutes later- while everyone was wearing their hats- we got given tokens to complete a survey about the workshop.

Buddhism day was exciting! Firstly, we spoke about Buddhists and what they ate and wore (they like to eat rice.)

Most of the boys normally wear waistcoats and the girls normally wear saris. I put my hand up to dress up as a Buddha, and I was told what to say and do. (I looked pretty funny.) There were also some other children who got dressed up too. We acted it out and everyone else loved it. The man also told us that most Buddhists are vegetarians and do not like killing any animals. After that, we did some colouring in the style of Buddhists and made some lanterns that were very vibrant. I really enjoyed it!

Mrs Stacey had the pleasure of taking a small group of girls to a Swimming Gala at Canford School. After they had got over the shock of the amazing facilities, the girls performed really well against nine other East Dorset schools. The results included 3rd in the Yr6 25m Butterfly and 4th in the Yr5 50m Freestyle. Needless to say, we are very proud of the girls’ achievements.

The Netball Tournament

 

On the 17^th of January Miss Tinsley took 16 children to a netball tournament at Lychett Minster School.

When we arrived at the school, we did a warm up and got into the courts for our first match of the tournament. We were split into two teams yellow and blue. The first match that the blues played was against Lytchett reds. we won against them 3-1 Unfortunately the yellows lost against the Blacks for Lychett.

The second match that was played on the two courts was Upton blues and Lychett Blacks. Upton yellows played Lychett reds and sadly lost but Upton blues lost as well.

As it came to the end of the tournament we had to play Upton vs Upton and Lychett vs Lychett. Upton blues won and Lychett blacks won.

We were told by the head of PE at the manor who came where on the leaderboard.4^TH was Upton Yellows, 3^RD was Lychett Reds, 2^RDwas Upton Blues and 1^ST came Lychett Blacks.

Thank you to everyone who was able to attend the Year 6 SATS evening. We hope you found it informative and now have a better understanding of what your child is working hard at to achieve. Please note, homework will be set from the CGP books which your child would have received if they attended the evening. Please contact your child's class teacher for any further information or if you were unable to attend the evening, but would like to have a chat about the SATS and what is expected. Huge thanks to the Year 6 team for hosting a very useful evening!

The Year 6 Tambourine Band, once again bought joy and smiles to residents of Burwood nursing home in Broadstone. Along with solo performers, the musicians, led by Mrs Clapcott, performed a mix of Christmas songs and Carols. Once more, the musicians of Upton Junior School are out and about spreading Christmas cheer! congratulations to all involved for fantastic effort and work in the extended community. Many thanks to Mr Williams for sorting transport and support.
