Here, you will find important information regarding maths, key policies and documents and helpful tips and links. We continually strive to ensure that our children experience maths in a supportive and positive environment, guiding each child through their own journey of mastery. Our policy outlines our intent, the how and why, and intended impact of our approach to maths.
Our policy (from White Rose) doesn't only explain which formal methods of calculation we use at UJS, but it also explains which manipulatives and visual representations are used and the benefits of using them.
Below you will find the White Rose overview for the year for years 3-6. These can also be found on individual year group pages.
This year, our Year 4 children will be sitting the MTC test.
The purpose of the check is to determine whether pupils can fluently recall their times tables up to 12, which is essential for future success in mathematics.
So, what is the MTC?
The MTC is an on-screen check consisting of 25 times tables questions. Your child will answer 3 practice questions before moving on to the official check and will then have 6 seconds to answer each question. On average, the check should take no longer than 5 minutes to complete.
How can I help my child?
Simple: make times tables part of daily life. Take any opportunity to ask questions, chant facts or play games.
As a school, we have signed up to Times Table Rockstars (TTRS). The 'Soundcheck' game mode allows the children to experience using an online platform and the time limit of 6 seconds per question. Using TTRS will allow the children to practise their times tables independently at home. Hit the button is another recommended online platform.

The image below indicates the times tables that children find hardest to learn (red) to the easiest (blue). Times tables that involved the 6, 7, 8, 9 and 12 times tables are those that we recommend should be practised most. However, children should be practising all times tables up to 12 x 12.
