The Maths Challenge!
At 1:00pm on Tuesday 3rd November Kaitlyn Hathaway, Marco Maggi, Millie Sewell and Jack Stone went to The Maths Challenge at Bournemouth Collegiate Preparatory School in Poole.
When we got to Bournemouth Collegiate Preparatory the car park was small and there weren’t any spaces. So we went to the end of the road to park.
Once we got there by walking, we had to get registered in the office. A girl called Zoey led us into their hall to understand what we will be doing in The Maths Challenge.
In the gigantic hall, there were around 30 different schools (120 students). We were then given a card that had your table number on so we went to the other room and stood near our table. We had seven different challenges which were: dominos, tangrams, cards, catch the train, broken calculator shopping spree and bonuses challenge.
For the shopping spree we had to add up the same amounts or different amounts of money. We had to place tangrams in the shapes for the tangram round. Marco and Kaitlyn were the first ones to finish. For catch the train, we had to find the difference between two times or find the train they needed to get on. After catch the train, we completed the dominoes task which meant there was a laminated piece of paper on your table with numbers on and you had to match up the dominoes with the paper. The card challenge had some sentences and you had to figure out how to put the cards in the right order then your marker would come and check if it was right.
Then we had the broken calculators which is where some numbers show up and you have to figure out how to solve by deciding what operations to use.
After the big, hard maths challenge we all had a delicious pizza and drink.

Thank You Miss Tinsley for taking us!
Ever wondered what the children think of Upton Junior School?
See what some of them said......
On Friday 18th September the whole of Year Five went to Lulworth Cove. We went as part of our topic on the ‘Jurassic Coast’, which we are studying till Christmas.
In the morning at school we were split into our groups with their leaders and then boarded onto the two large coaches. Once we all arrived, we were all very excited to get going.
Everyone walked to the Visitor Centre and we met the three rangers from Lulworth Cove who were going to lead us through the activities. My group (5M) went with Derry, Mrs Wood’s class went with Kirsten and Miss Tinsley’s class went with David.
The three activities which all the children got to explore were a walk around Lulworth; starting at Stair hole and studying the rocks which can be seen and looking at the naturally formed caves, arches, stacks and stumps. Then walking down from the view point and acting out how the cove was formed.
Outside the visitor centre was the second activity where the groups got to look at the types of rock found at Lulworth and work out which would be best to build a house out of.
Finally, the last activity was in the school room where each ranger talked through a power point with videos, pictures and animations on Lulworth cove and how erosion has taken place and caused the features we see today. We even got a brief glimpse into the future of what may happen with erosion to Lulworth cove!
After the activities with the rangers it was finally lunch time! We all sat on a field near to the cove and after lunch everyone got to play in the field and roll down the hill!
As a treat after playing and lunch we were all able to get an ice cream! There were so many flavours and colours to choose from and everyone said how delicious they were. Mine definitely was!
After a final play, we had a photo as a group and walked back to the coaches to head to school.
I think that I can say we all had a brilliant time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. Plus we missed the rain all day too! I would also like to thank the parent helpers and staff who came on our trip as without you it wouldn’t have been possible to go. Thank you!
Miss Marks.
